If there is one fish that sums up the Flinders Island beach experience, it is the sand flathead. They sit in the holes and gutters just off the shore, waiting for a bait to drift past, and on a good tide you can fill a bag without ever leaving the sand.
Read the beach
The trick is finding the holes. Look for the darker water where the sand drops away between the banks. Flathead lie on the edges of these holes facing into the current, so a bait cast up-current and allowed to roll back through the hole will often get picked up on the drop.
Keep it simple
You do not need much gear. A medium spin rod, a running sinker rig and fresh bait will cover you. On our guided tours we supply all the rods, reels, bait and tackle, so you can turn up with nothing and still go home with dinner.
Clean your catch on the beach, keep a feed and let the small ones go. There is nothing better than a BBQ of fresh flathead fillets as the sun drops over the dunes.
